If you’ve wondered how technological innovation will help optimize the grid and reduce outages, come tour Oncor Electric Delivery’s Technology Demonstration & Education Center (TDEC) at the 2016 IEEE PES T&D Conference & Expo. Located just 20 minutes from downtown Dallas, the TDEC shows how maximizing distributed generation and storage improves reliability and flexibility of operations while enhancing the customer’s experience. Nine generation sources support this 100-acre microgrid! The site is anchored by a 200 kW (400 kWh) energy storage system, over 100 kW of photovoltaic (PV) solar with south and west facing elements and a 65 kW propane micro turbine.
Guests are guided through three areas during the tour. First, a multimedia immersion room provides a high-level overview of how Oncor has adapted to technological change. It also addresses several key questions that Oncor is answering with this facility, such as the integration of solar and energy storage into the grid. Second, guests step into the microgrid demonstration room, where state-of-the-art technology provides real-time monitoring and automation of distribution devices from a variety of manufacturers. Third, guests head outdoors for a live demonstration of the energy storage system, solar arrays, microturbine and distribution equipment.
Oncor also showcases other renewable and sustainable aspects of the TDEC, such as rainwater collection and irrigation. Oncor is currently pursuing a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for the facility.
