PPL Electric Utilities to Rebuild Transmission Line Across Susquehanna River
PPL Electric Utilities has announced plans to conduct essential work in the Harrisburg and New Cumberland areas, aimed at rebuilding a transmission line spanning the Susquehanna River. This reconstruction forms part of a larger 3.2-mile transmission line project, which aims to bolster reliability for local residents, minimize outages, fortify the grid against severe weather conditions, and facilitate renewable energy connections to facilitate the shift towards a greener energy future.
The specific phase of this extensive project necessitates the construction of a temporary stone causeway and floating road across a section of the river while the work is carried out. The ongoing efforts are expected to be completed in the autumn of 2023, with full restoration of the area continuing through the autumn of 2024. Notably, PPL Electric's continued investments in transmission infrastructure since 2012, including this initiative, have resulted in a 92% reduction in outage frequency.
The nearby boat launch will remain unaffected during the rebuilding process. However, the western side of the river will be inaccessible to boating traffic, while the eastern part will remain open throughout the duration of the project. PPL Electric has taken measures to ensure the safety of boaters and other recreational users by installing signs and buoys in the river to provide clear notifications.
