Sept. 9, 2024
The project includes the installation of up to 114 wind turbine generators, offshore substations, and export cable corridors.

The Biden-Harris administration has approved the Maryland Offshore Wind Project, the nation’s 10th commercial-scale offshore wind energy project approved under President Biden’s leadership.

This brings the total capacity of approved projects to over 15 GW, moving halfway toward the administration’s goal of 30 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030. These projects are expected to power around 5.25 million homes.

The Maryland Offshore Wind Project is expected to generate over 2 GW of energy, enough to power over 718,000 homes. The project, located approximately 8.7 nautical miles off Maryland’s coast and 9 miles from Sussex County, Delaware, is expected to support around 2,680 jobs annually over seven years during its development and construction phases.

The project consists of three planned phases, which include the proposed installation of up to 114 wind turbine generators, up to four offshore substation platforms, one meteorological tower, and up to four offshore export cable corridors.wo phases, known as MarWin and Momentum Wind, already have offshore renewable energy certificates from the state of Maryland.
