Summary
Electrical utilities around the country continue efforts to move overhead electrical transmission and distribution lines underground (undergrounding). Moving lines underground helps to reduce power outages, improve overall grid reliability, by reducing the effects of wildfires and hurricanes. This is particularly true in California, Texas, and the Gulf Coast. Each area is facing challenges with environmental conditions that make overhead lines a liability, causing additional outages, customer complaints, and costly, redundant repairs. Contractors need to be prepared to overcome challenges and operate at a high level of efficiency.
This presentation will highlight electrical contractors and undergrounding projects in California and Texas. Project specifications, equipment selection, and jobsite challenges will be discussed in relation to production rates and installation efficiency. In addition, this presentation will explore job site considerations related to pulling electrical conductor including calculating pull force, traffic safety, communications, and logistics.
