Ask the Expert U.S. Offshore Wind Power: Time For a Reality-Based Reset
Dec. 18, 2023
President Biden’s goal of having 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power operating by 2030 (“30 by 30”) was a moonshot project when it was announced in early 2021. But the U.S. is a late entrant to the offshore wind power market, and the challenges have been formidable. Developers have had to drop projects and renegotiate the terms of their power purchase agreements for others. HVDC transmission development has proven to be particularly nettlesome.
Marianne Goldsborough, Burns & McDonnell’s HVDC business manager, discusses the need for a more realistic timeframe, how to meet the logistical challenges of offshore wind power, how to unkink the wind energy supply chain, and the need to reform U.S. renewable energy policy.
