FirstEnergy subsidiary Potomac Edison has commissioned a new substation in Frederick County, Maryland, which will boost the dependability of the grid for close to 7,900 customers in the Jefferson, Brunswick and Petersville areas.
The new substation, located in Jefferson on nine acres of land, is akin to an off-ramp adjacent to a highway and converts power from a regional transmission base to a lower voltage for local businesses and homes.
“Increasing the capacity of the local electric system through this project will help reduce extended outages for thousands of customers we serve,” said Linda Moss, president of FirstEnergy's Maryland operations.
Potomac Edison has the green light from the Maryland Public Service Commission to conclude more projects that improve service dependability and reduce power outages in 2023. The company has already infused $9.9 million toward the same initiative in 2022.
