The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) recently awarded The AES Corp. and Edison International/Southern California Edison with the 93rd Edison Award. Presented annually and selected by a panel of former energy industry executives, the Edison Award is the electric power industry's highest honor.
The AES Corp. was selected for its Alamitos Battery Energy Storage System. In 2020, AES completed the 400-MWh standalone battery energy storage system in California, making it one of the largest battery storage systems in operation in the world today and the first in the United States specifically selected to replace a natural gas peaker plant.
Edison International/Southern California Edison was selected for Southern California Edison's innovative suite of programs designed to help accelerate the electrification of the transportation sector. With nearly US$2 billion of funding approved in California, the programs support electric vehicle (EV) adoption and the installation of more than 50,000 new charging ports throughout its service territory.
"As EEI member companies continue to advance their clean energy commitments, technologies such as energy storage systems and programs that support the adoption of transportation electrification are positively transforming the electric power industry," said EEI President Tom Kuhn. "AES' and Edison International/Southern California Edison's investments are enhancing the resilience, reliability, and security of the energy grid while also benefiting the customers and the communities they serve every day. I applaud each for their innovative work and congratulate them for winning this prestigious award."
"We are honored to be recognized with the 2021 Edison Award," said Andrés Gluski, president and CEO of AES. "Together with Fluence, we are proud to support the sector's transition to low-carbon sources of energy."
"As the country continues the important effort of electrifying transportation, it is critical that we support all customers and ensure our vulnerable communities aren't left behind," said Pedro J. Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International. "I am proud of everything the Southern California Edison team is doing to make EVs accessible to more Californians. We are honored to be recognized for work that will help modernize the grid and create a cleaner environment."
