Pete and Buster were in a pickle. However, this was by no means new for them. They were definitely brothers in crime, literally brothers and mischievousness was their crime. They both worked for the G. A. sewage authority as field technicians and were affectionately known as P.U. (Pete Uber) and B.S. (Buster Simon) Brown.
Their dilemma started when the boys rushed out to an equipment alarm call without their electrical testing equipment and without a phone to call in to the central facility where the alarm came on. They had been arranging a little prank for the mayor’s planned speech that day. They realized they did not have their equipment when they arrived at a remote control building where a contractor had just installed three new switches. One of the switches operated a pump located five miles away. They had no way to determine if the pump was on without going to the remote pump station and they had just enough time to travel to the pump station once and return to the control building to try another switch if the first one did not work. They could individually turn on and off any of the three switches now at the control building, but could leave only one on when they traveled to the remote location. How could they determine the correct switch, of the three, with one round trip to the pump station and get back to the office in time for the Mayor’s speech and luncheon?
