CPFL Energia, the largest non state owned electric energy company in Brazil, has selected the eMeter EnergyIP meter data management platform. EnergyIP has been part of the Siemens Smart Grid portfolio since the acquisition of eMeter in January 2012. CPFL has selected IBM for consulting services to meet its smart metering data management and integration requirements. This project is the first Brazilian implementation of a meter data management (MDM) solution capable of supporting a full-scale residential metering rollout for a large utility.

CPFL Energia is a holding company that, through its subsidiaries, distributes, generates and commercializes energy, in the Brazilian electricity sector, and also operates in the segment of value-added services. With 13% of the market share, CPFL Energia heads the distribution segment through its eight distributors, which serve 569 municipalities in the States of São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Minas Gerais.

These eight distributors, which account for the distribution of electric energy to 7 million customers across its concession area, will take a phased approach, initially implementing the eMeter EnergyIP platform to support its high and medium voltage customers. EnergyIP will be integrated with two advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) systems using eMeter AMI Adapter technology, as well as the core enterprise systems for CPFL's operating companies.

The project is part of CPFL’s Tauron Smart Grid initiative to improve its overall energy quality, operational performance and relationship with its customers. The initiative includes smart metering, MDM, outage management, and mobile workforce management solutions.

During the project IBM will serve as the EnergyIP system integrator, providing consultation in governance, process design and best practices. IBM will also manage the planning, installation and configuration of the solution, as well as testing, go-live support and initial assisted operation.
