Company Reaches 1.8 GW of Battery Energy Storage Capacity in the U.S.

Oct. 11, 2024
ENGIE’s total BESS capacity can now provide around 1.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) across the ERCOT and California Independent System Operator (CAISO) systems.

ENGIE has announced that it has surpassed 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in operation across the United States. Since the beginning of 2024, the company has added approximately 1 GW of new BESS capacity to its portfolio, further establishing its presence in the energy storage sector.

With 24 BESS projects now operational across the U.S., including six commissioned in 2024, ENGIE has become one of the largest operators of battery storage systems in the country. The company is a major independent operator of battery systems supporting the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid.

The company's growth in battery storage has been supported by the acquisition of Broad Reach Power (BRP) in August 2023. This acquisition has expanded ENGIE’s portfolio and brought additional expertise in battery technology.

“The development of flexibility assets such as BESS will play an essential role in ensuring the reliability and resilience of the energy system in which the share of renewables is constantly increasing. Following the strategic acquisition of Broad Reach Power in 2023, ENGIE is rapidly accelerating in batteries development, with the objective to reach 10 GW of installed capacity worldwide by 2030,” said Sebastien Arbola, Executive Vice President in charge of Flex Gen & Retail activities.

ENGIE operates both stand-alone BESS projects, ranging from 10 MW to 200 MW, as well as co-located facilities alongside large solar projects such as the 320 MW Five Wells solar installation in Bell County, Texas. The company’s total BESS capacity can now provide around 1.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) across the ERCOT and California Independent System Operator (CAISO) systems.

In addition to its storage capacity, ENGIE has approximately 8 GW of solar and wind projects in operation or construction across North America, aligning with its ongoing efforts to contribute to the energy transition.
