Several assets throughout Alectra Utilities’ system in Hamilton are facing significant pressures due to increased customer demand and a growing number of system components nearing, or at end of life, which require replacement. Alectra Utilities allocated a significant budget for capital improvements in 2018, including system renewal efforts.
For example, Alectra Utilities is focusing on revitalizing critical electrical infrastructure in the Dundas area of Hamilton, Ontario. This job is part of a two-part modernization project worth $2 million. As part of the initiative, Alectra Utilities will replace the old 4 kV system with the new, higher voltage 27.6 kV system. The $2 million investment in the municipality is part of a five-year infrastructure commitment undertaken by the local utility.
This proactive upgrading includes 7 km of new primary overhead wires supported by 30 new switches and 34 new transformers. Underground infrastructure is also being upgraded with 1.1 km of underground duct and 2.2 km of underground primary cable supported by 11 padmount transformers. These improvements along with 3.6 km of secondary cable are part of Alectra Utilities’ commitment to better meet current and future electricity needs.
"Alectra Utilities is proud of its continuous investments while supporting growth and providing safe, reliable and sustainable electricity for homes and businesses in the communities it serves," the company states.
