Remembering Anthony Rickley of Doble

As a young Client Service engineer, Rickley traveled extensively across the US, providing the five days of training for each new client the company signed.

We recently lost a beloved and well-respected member of the Doble family. Anthony Rickley died on Friday, January 9, 2016 at the age of 94. To those lucky enough to know him, he went by Tony or Rick.

When you ask anyone to describe Tony Rickley, the one refrain you always hear is his unwavering dedication to Doble’s clients. In 1946, Rickley began his professional career at Doble as an intern making fifty cents an hour. Over the course of six decades, he shaped our Client Service organization, defined what customer support can really mean and helped prepare Doble for its future success.

“I always thought that while the company carried Frank Doble's name the true creator of the enterprise was ALR,” said John Petrou, who was President at Doble from 1977-2000. “Rick always thought in terms of what was best for the clients that he served. He truly was the high priest of the Doble Way.”As a young Client Service engineer, Rickley traveled extensively across the US, providing the five days of training for each new client the company signed. He had an unquestioning belief in the quality of Doble equipment. He could often be heard saying, “The test set is always right. You may not understand what it’s saying, but the test set is right.”

When Rickley officially retired, he was Senior Vice President of Client Service. This group, and its mission to provide technical support and training to clients, was and still is the cornerstone of Doble’s business - and much of that is thanks to Rickley’s determination.

“Every time I wrote or signed a contract, I assumed the personal responsibility to deliver what I promised,” said Rickley. He held himself to high standards and expected the same from his peers and his team.

“He was an exemplary ‘Doble Engineer’ with a great sense of humor and of duty, always looking for solutions, helping clients and making long lasting personal friendships in the process, as well as building up substantial good will for the Doble company,” said Marshall Turley, a retired Client Service engineer who worked with Rickley. “He pioneered for Doble internationally in Brazil, Mexico, and elsewhere. He was a good engineer, a good company man, a good friend, and a good example for others to strive towards matching.”

Rickley believed in Doble. He believed in the services it could provide the power industry and championed the importance of its customer service. We are all the beneficiaries of his dedication.
