First Power from Buffalo Plains Wind Project Delivered to Alberta's Grid

Sept. 10, 2024
Once completed, Buffalo Plains, with a total capacity of 495MW, will be the largest onshore wind farm constructed in Canada.

Renewable energy investments firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced the delivery of the first power from the Buffalo Plains wind project to Alberta’s grid in Canada.

Buffalo Plains, set to become Canada’s largest onshore wind farm with a capacity of 495MW, began installing turbines in April 2024. Currently, over a third of the turbines are in place, with full installation and grid connection expected by the fourth quarter of 2024.

Once completed, the project will feature 83 turbines, providing renewable energy to approximately 240,000 households in Alberta. The project is being delivered in collaboration with Siemens Gamesa and Borea Construction.

Buffalo Plains is a part of CIP’s broader renewable energy portfolio across North America, which includes over 29 GW of assets spanning wind, solar, battery storage, pumped storage hydro, and transmission.

In addition to Buffalo Plains, CIP also has Canada’s largest solar and wind projects (by MW) under development.
