During storms or other natural disasters, transmission lines may fail, and towers may collapse. Often in these situations, quick and safe restoration of the grid is vital. Ideally, risk of failure and responses should be evaluated in advance. Emergency Restoration systems (ERS) a re temporary guyed-mast structures, and are a common storm restoration tool. In this tutorial, Tower Solutions will discuss ways to plan and approach emergency response using these tools. This includes tips on analyzing a transmission grid to identify potential failure risks, and advance preparation and training of engineers and line crew.
This tutorial at the 2022 IEEE PES Transmission & Distribution Conference will also discuss a step-by-step methodology to approach an emergency when it occurs, the various ways tools such as ERS can be deployed in different configurations, and common pitfalls to avoid. Finally, the tutorial will cover common constraints such as rights-of-way, optimization strategies to obtain the most cost-effective solution, and lessons learned from past restorations.
