Mongolia Signs Additional Grant Agreement of $8.72 Million for Choir-Sainshand Transmission Line Project

The transmission project will fund the construction of the 220 km Choir-Sainshand double circuit 220 kV transmission line, as well as the substations at Choir and Sainshand.

Government of Mongolia (GoM), the European Union (EU) and The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed an additional grant agreement of $8.72 million for Choir-Sainshand Transmission Line Project.

The agreement is part of the $86.86 million financing to improve Mongolia's energy infrastructure and support the country's economic development, which consists of $9.16 million grant from the EU, $70.43 million loan from the EBRD, and $7.3 million in technical assistance from donors, including Japan.

The transmission project will fund the construction of the 220 km Choir-Sainshand double circuit 220 kV transmission line, as well as the substations at Choir and Sainshand. The Project Implementing Unit is working under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and the construction is projected to start in 2025 with the completion slated for end of 2027.

The project is expected to improve interconnection of the electricity transmission network, minimize transmission losses, increase electricity from renewable energy in the power system and reduce environmental impact.
