Southeast Hydrogen Hub Coalition Submits Formal Application for Funding to the U.S. Department of Energy
The Southeast Hydrogen Hub coalition has filed an application with the DOE for finances to construct a green hydrogen network across six states and with five large utilities. The DOE has earmarked $8 billion for regional clean hydrogen hubs as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Conclusive funding decisions are slated by the fall of 2023.
The Southeast Hydrogen Hub coalition was among 79 hubs to file initial concept papers to the DOE in 2022. Toward the end of December 2022, the DOE notified 32 other applicants and the coalition to submit complete applications by April 7, 2023.
The Southeast Hydrogen Hub coalition is formulating a regional energy ecosystem that permits members to use green hydrogen in decarbonization efforts for communities and customers. This project could generate jobs and bring economic development benefits to the region.
The coalition includes major utility companies Dominion Energy, Duke Energy, Louisville Gas & Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company (LG&E and KU), Southern Company and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), along with Battelle and others.Other members of the Southeast Hydrogen Hub coalition will include a growing list of hydrogen users from a variety of industries in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The coalition expects its membership to grow as news of the opportunity spreads and as interest in hydrogen intensifies.
