Nevada-based Berkshire Hathaway Energy unit NV Energy is installing dynamic line rating (DLR) software and sensors on nearly 90 miles of transmission lines, including two 120 kV lines extending from Reno.
This project deploys 29 LineVision sensors and intends to relieve transmission congestion in the area around Reno, the fourth-largest city in the state. Project partners say the DLR system will enhance transmission capacity and boost overall grid reliability.
The project was funded by a grant awarded to NV Energy by the Department of Energy aimed at accelerating advanced power grid technology deployment and maximizing electricity transmission across existing systems to lower operating costs.
The DLR software uses field-based sensors to capture real-time data on environmental parameters that affect the operational efficiency of the transmission lines. By providing a real-time assessment of the transmission line’s capacity, NV Energy can optimize power flow, enhance grid reliability, and efficiently meet the evolving energy demands of their customers.
